I ask not only on behalf of these, but also on behalf of those who will believe in me through their word, that they may all be one.

As you, Father, are in me and I am in you, may they also be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me.

In 2010, the board and staff members of the General Commission on Christian Unity and Interreligious Concerns (GCCUIC) began drafting General Conference legislation to move the agency under the supervision of the Council of Bishops.  The General Conference voted to approve the legislation at its quadrennial meeting in May 2012 in Tampa.  Immediately following General Conference, a transition team was created to begin the process of migrating the GCCUIC into the Council of Bishops.  Transition team members include:  Bishop Mary Ann Swenson, Ecumenical Officer for the Council of Bishops and former president of the GCCUIC;  the Rev. Stephen Sidorak, general secretary of GCCUIC;  and former GCCUIC board members the Rev. Youngsook Kang, Tracy Merrick and Harry Askin.  The transition team has worked in consultation with the Council of Bishops Leadership Team on Ecumenical and Interreligious Relations which includes Bishops Sudarshana Devadhar of the New England Annual Conference,  Gaspar Domingos of the Western Angola Annual Conference, and Michael Watson of the North Georgia Annual Conference.

In November, 2012 the Council of Bishops passed a resolution to establish the Office of Christian Unity and Interreligious Relationships (OCUIR).   An organizational meeting of newly appointed OCUIR members will convene in January 2013 in New York.  The transition team will serve as facilitators to update members on their work and to move the visioning process forward.   The transition team will remain in place until October 2013.

Looking ahead, the OCUIR hopes to have a time of education and formation around ecumenical witness during the Forum for Active Bishops in May.  The OCUIR will also participate in the World Council of Churches 10th Assembly in Korea in October.
